How to Change the DVD Region on a Windows Dell XPS M140

    • 1). Understand the geographic regions that can be encoded onto a DVD disk. When DVDs are made, they are set to the region in which they were manufactured. Manufacturers of DVD players, including the players used in laptops such as the Dell XPS M140, are set not to play disks from a region other than the area in which the computer or player was made. This helps the companies control pricing, importing and other commercial aspects of the DVD business. There are currently six geographic regions to which a DVD can be set.

    • 2). Turn on the Dell XPS M140 laptop and wait for the Windows Media Center operating system to load.

    • 3). Click "Start" in the lower left-hand side of the screen. Alternatively, click the "My Computer" icon on your Windows desktop.

    • 4). Right-click "My Computer," either in the Start menu or on the desktop. A pop-up menu will appear.

    • 5). Click "Properties" in the pop-up menu. A system window will be displayed.

    • 6). Click the "Hardware" tab on the top of the window.

    • 7). Click "Device Manager."

    • 8). Double-click "DVD/CD-ROM" in the drop-down menu of available drives in the Device Manager.

    • 9). Right-click the DVD drive for the Dell XPS M140 and select "Properties" in the pop-up menu.

      Click the "DVD Region" tab in the "Properties" window. In the drop-down menu, select the region from which the DVD you are trying to watch was originally manufactured. This is typically either Region 1 (Canada and the United States) or Region 2 (Europe). Click "OK."

      Insert the DVD into the DVD drive on your Dell XPS M140 and watch your movie.
