- 1). Reboot the computer and go into safe mode. To do this, wait for a single white cursor to blink in the upper left corner of the screen during the startup process. When this happens, press the "F8" key. On the following screen, select the option for "Safe Mode." Choose the option without networking to free up the most resources.
- 2). Click the "Start" button in the lower left corner of the screen and place the cursor in the window that says, "Search programs and files." Enter the file you want to rename. If it doesn't appear in the window above, click "See More Results."
- 3). In either window in which it appears, "right-click" on the file name and select "Rename" from the popup window. Change the name in the edit box that appears and press "Enter." Reboot the computer to go back into normal mode.
