How to Remove a Drive Letter Using the Registry
- 1). Log into the system with an administrator account.
- 2). Launch the Registry Editor by clicking "Start," typing "regedit" in the "Start Search" text field and pressing "Enter," if using Windows Vista or 7. The Registry Editor will open.
- 3). Click "Start" and "Run," type "regedit" in the provided text field and click "OK," if using Windows XP.
- 4). Expand "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE," "SYSTEM," then "MountedDevices." Right-click the "MountDevices" sub-folder and choose "Export." Choose a location where this file is to be saved temporarily and confirm. This will create a backup key that can be restroed if the modifications you make damage your system.
- 5). Right-click the drive letter you wish to delete from the right pane. Choose "Delete" from the drop-down menu options. Confirm by clicking "Yes." Close the Registry Editor and restart your computer.
