Is it Dangerous to Mix Moth Balls & Cedar?
- Moth balls themselves are toxic. They are made of the chemicals naphthalene and para-dichlorobenzene. They are harmful if swallowed, and the vapors they produce can cause headaches, nausea, breathing difficulties and other symptoms.
- If someone accidentally ingests moth balls or you suspect they have become ill after being exposed to their vapors, call your local poison control center immediately.
- People who are concerned about environmental and health repercussions from using moth balls can use cedar oil as a natural bug repellent. They can also make sachets by filling nylon bags with cedar chips and place them in drawers, closets and chests to protect against bugs.
