How to Build a Guide for Cabinet Pulls
- 1). Measure the size of the drawer front. This will determine the size of the drawer guide and backer boards on the jig.
- 2). Cut two pieces of 1/4-inch material the same size as the drawer fronts using a table saw. Mark these as drawer backer and drawer guide.
- 3). Measure the thickness of the drawer front. Most drawer fronts will be 3/4-inch thick. Cut a piece of wood the same depth and length as the drawer front using a table saw. This will be your cleat.
- 4). Place the cleat on a flat surface. Align the drawer guide board with the cleat so that the tops are even. Attach the 1/4-inch drawer guide to the cleat using a power drill and grabber screws. The cleat is designed to sit on top of the drawer front when drilling cabinet pulls.
- 5). Attach the back board in the same manner as the drawer guide board. You should have a U-shaped jig.
- 6). Mark a center line on the jig in a vertical and horizontal fashion. Measure the mounting width of the holes of the cabinet pulls you purchased. Measure over from the centerline on the jig using a tape measure, half the distance of the overall handle width. Make a mark using a pencil. Double check that the marks are correct by holding the handle up to the jig.
- 7). Drill a 3/16-inch diameter hole at the marks. Drill completely through the drawer guide board as well as the drawer guide backer board. Test fit a handle in the jig before drilling into the drawer fronts of your cabinet.
