Are Electric Fireplaces Dangerous?
- Electric fireplaces do not use actual flames for the heat source, so they are a safer alternative than real wood or gas fireplaces. The exterior of electric fireplaces does not get hot to the touch, so they are safer around children and pets than real fireplaces.
- Electric fireplaces do not produce carbon monoxide, since they lack a real flame. Carbon monoxide is a harmful gas responsible for over 100 deaths each year.
- To reduce other dangers of operating an electric fireplace, use the appliance in an area where it is not likely to be knocked over. Do not store flammable items near the heater, and do not use the electric fireplace in a bathroom or near water. Make sure the plug has a snug connection in the power outlet.
