How to Replace an Old Window in a College Dorm
- 1). Remove the sashes from the old dorm window while inside the dorm room. The window sash is the section of the window that moves. Push or pull the sash up to open the window. Press the latches at the top of the sash to release it. Hold the sash perpendicular to the window and wall and twist one side, pushing up on one side of the sash to pop the bottom of the sash from the window frame.
- 2). Access the outside of the window frame and remove the screws holding the fame in place. Once the screws are out, gently tap the inside of the exterior frame to release it from the wall. If layers of old paint hold the frame in place, trace the edge of the frame with a utility knife to release the frame from the dried paint.
- 3). Cut through the caulk at the seam between the window jamb and the interior frame from inside the room. Force a pry bar into the opening and insert a putty knife.
- 4). Pull the window frame from the jamb by gently pulling back on the pry bar and moving the putty knife along the jam, removing the stops that hold the window in place. When you have pulled the stops free, revealing the window jamb, remove the window from the opening. You may need to unscrew the window from the jamb to release the window.
- 5). Set the new window in place to ensure it fits properly in the rough opening. Then remove the window.
- 6). Place a bead of silicone caulk in each bottom corner and seal the bottom of the window sill and 6 inches up each side with foil tape.
- 7). Apply silicone caulk to the outside stops, along the inner edge and to the bottom of the window opening.
- 8). Set the new window in place and make sure it is level with a hand held level. Measure the window from corner to corner on each side. If the measurements are the same, the window is square.
- 9). Push wood shims into the top and bottom of the window and then into the sides of the window between the window and the jamb. Insert shims at each predrilled screw hole and as needed to square the window. Make sure that there is an even gap on both sides between the window sashes and the window frame. Check the operation of the window by opening and closing it.

Screw the window into place through the shims at the predrilled screw holes. - 11
Apply spray foam window insulation in the gaps between the window frame and the window jamb. Only use products specifically made for window installations. Check the operation of the window. - 12
Trim the shims with a utility knife until they are flush with the window. - 13
Nail the interior stops back into place, covering the window jamb. - 14
Press a foam backer rod into the gap on the exterior of the window and then apply a bead of silicone caulk along the edge to seal the seam.
