How to Tan a Rattle Snake
- 1). Cut in a straight line down the middle of the underside of the snake by starting with the anal vent and working toward the head.
- 2). Remove the skin by firmly pulling the skin away from the snake and using a sharp knife to disconnect the skin from the body. Start at the tail and work toward the head.
- 3). Pull the rest of the skin off with your hands once you have removed about 6 inches of skin with a knife.
- 4). Scrape the flesh off the snake skin with a serrated knife.
- 5). Wipe the skin on both sides using paper towels. Start from the head and work toward the tail.
- 1). Mix a solution of equal parts rubbing alcohol and glycerin in a sealable container. Make sure there's enough solution to fully submerge the skin.
- 2). Place the loosely rolled snake skin in the container, seal it and let it sit for two to three days. Stir the solution once per day.
- 3). Remove the skin from the solution and rinse it thoroughly with water.
- 4). Scrape loose membrane off the flesh side of the skin with a dull knife.
- 5). Thinly coat the flesh side of the skin with pure glycerin and let the skin hang dry for 24 hours.
- 6). Wipe the skin with a damp cloth.
