Grease Removal
- 1). Dab the grease with a clean cloth immediately. It's important to take care of a grease stain as soon as possible. Even waiting overnight will worsen your chances of getting out the grease stain.
- 2). Use a pretreatment. Work the grease out before putting the clothing in the washer. One effective pretreatment method is to use 1/2 cup of dish washing soap on the stain. Dish washing soap is designed to work on grease in your kitchen and it works well to remove grease from clothing too. Engine degreaser is another household item that works well as a pretreatment for grease stains, or you can choose to use a commercial product. Let the pretreatment set for 10 minutes, then blot the stain with a rag.
- 3). Rinse off and inspect. It's important to make sure that the grease has been removed before you throw your clothes in the washer. The washing machine does a poor job of removing grease from clothing and actually helps the stain set, so rinse the clothing off and inspect the site of the stain. A faint stain that has been pretreated can be washed out by the washer because the pretreatment lifted the stain to the surface, so the scrubbing of the washer could remove what's left of the grease. If the fabric looks good, move on to the next step. If the stain is obviously noticeable then repeat step 2.
- 4). Throw the clothing into the washer. Now that you have lifted the grease from the stain, the scrubbing of the washing machine will remove the last bit of grease left on the surface of the fabric.
