How to Change the Look of 1980s Melamine Cabinets
- 1). Remove the cabinet doors and hardware, place screws and hardware into a small plastic bag.
- 2). Fill any cracks, dents, or chips with wood putty. Allow the putty to dry completely, sand smooth.
- 3). Sand cabinet doors and framing lightly to create a surface for the primer to adhere to.
- 4). Wipe any excess sawdust off with a damp rag.
- 5). Apply one coat of primer to the framing and cabinets. Allow to dry completely. If the original color of your cabinets is showing through the primer, apply a second coat.
- 6). Roll two coats of the paint color you choose to the cabinets and framing. Allow paint to dry completely.
- 7). Paint the cabinets and framing with one coat of polyurethane sealant. Allow to dry.
