How to Make Etching Board Scratchboards
- 1). Coat a stiff piece of hard board material with a thick layer of white chalk. Paint over the white chalk with 2-inch paint brush and a solid layer of black India ink. Allow the painted board to dry overnight.
- 2). Select an image as inspiration and a guideline for your scratchboard art. Make a photocopy of the image to prepare the scratchboard.
- 3). Place the photocopied image on top of a scratchboard and use a ballpoint pen to trace the image details – leaving an indent of the traced lines on the surface of the scratchboard.
- 4). Scratch away sections of the black top layer of scratchboard with a craft knife to reveal the white chalk material below. Use the inspiration image and the indented trace lines as guides to determine where to remove the black top layer. Continue to remove black material with the craft knife until you have created the entire image.
