    • 1). Turn the power to the air conditioning unit off. Unplug the unit.

    • 2). Remove the outer cover of your air conditioning unit. Most covers can be removed by simultaneously pressing two small notches on opposing sides. Large, outdoor units may require you to unscrew the cover before removal is possible.

    • 3). Pull the air filter from your air conditioning unit. The filter is located directly behind the removable cover. Most air filters fit between plastic or metal slats on three sides, leaving one side free so removal is possible.

    • 4). Scrub the air filter gently with a soft-bristled brush. A dirty air filter appears as if it is covered in lint. To avoid spreading dust, dirt and other contaminants, scrub the filter outdoors and over a trash can. Do not scrub vigorously, as this may damage the fragile filter and render it useless. Place the air filter in a safe location (away from pets, children and outdoor hazards) once all the dust and dirt particles have been removed.

    • 5). Remove dust from the vents and cover by wiping them with a cotton or microfiber cloth. Heavy dirt is best removed using a vigorous scrubbing motion, while dust is easily removed with several light swipes of a cloth.

    • 6). Clean the air conditioner's coils. Coils are silver in color and are usually exposed on the back of air conditioning units. Use a firm, back-and-forth motion to scrub debris and dirt from the coils.

    • 7). Replace the air conditioner's filter after all other components have been cleaned. Once the filter is in place, affix the cover in its original position. Screw or snap the cover in place.
