How to Video Fireworks
- 1). Set up your tripod a safe distance from the fireworks. Also distance yourself from bystanders who could accidentally enter your shot.
- 2). Set your video camera to a low exposure setting. Over-exposed will ruin your shot, causing the fireworks to appear as indistinct white blobs on a dark background. Error on the side of caution --- a slight under-exposure won't have a significant impact on your video.
- 3). Turn off your camera's auto-focus. Your camera will attempt to compensate for each firework's trajectory by going in and out of focus, generating inconsistent, blurry footage.
- 4). Set the zoom on your camera so that the fireworks fill up the full frame. There is no need to follow conventional framing rules if there is no other point of reference in your shot.
- 5). Obtain an ordered list of fireworks from the event planner or firework technician. It's difficult to successfully capture all of the fireworks in the display with a single camera without an excess of motion, so having a list will allow you to select and prepare for the fireworks you would like to capture.
