    • 1). Look on the backside of your computer to check which output jacks it has available. Most older computers only have a VGA port as a monitor output. However, some may have DVI or HDMI ports as possible outputs.

    • 2). Look on the backside of your flat-screen TV to check which input jacks it has available. Most flat-screen TVs have a VGA input option, along with an HDMI input option.

    • 3). Match the input jack on the back of your TV with the output jack on the back of your computer (VGA to VGA, DVI to DVI, HDMI to HDMI).

    • 4). Purchase the proper cable to go from your computer to your TV. These cables can be found at any electronics store.

    • 5). Plug the cable into the proper jacks on your computer and TV.

    • 6). Turn the TV on. Press the "Input" or "Source" button to switch the TV into whichever input mode you used to plug in the computer.

    • 7). Turn the computer on. Your computer will automatically detect your flat-screen TV as your monitor.
