How to Reinstall Windows XP Service Pack 2

    • 1). Remove Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) from your computer before you attempt to reinstall it. Go to "Start" and click on "Control Panel." Then double-click on the icon for "Add/Remove Programs." Use your mouse to check the box where it says "Show Updates." Scroll down until you find Service Pack 2, click on it once to highlight it and then click "Remove."

    • 2). Go to the Microsoft support website for a detailed installation walkthrough (see References) and click on "Custom." This will initiate a scan of your computer and provide you with a list of critical updates.

    • 3). Select "Review and install updates." Before installing, however, check to ensure that Windows XP Service Pack 2 is selected as one of the critical updates.

    • 4). Select "Install updates" to begin downloading SP2 along with any other critical updates you've selected.

    • 5). Follow the on-screen prompts once the SP2 Setup Wizard begins. Once the Setup Wizard has finished installing SP2 on your system, you will be required to restart your computer. Simply click "Restart now" in order to reboot the system and complete the installation.
