How to Make Dining Room Cushions

    • 1). Measure the length and width of the old cushion or the seat of the chair if you do not have a cushion. Cut as many pieces of your new foam to this same measurement as you have dining room chairs, using an electric knife.

    • 2). Take your foam measurements and add 1 inch all the way around to account for the width of the foam and use that measurement for cutting out your fabric.

    • 3). Mark out these measurements on your fabric using chalk. Cut out two pieces, one for the top and one for the bottom of the cushion.

    • 4). Lay one square of the fabric on your work surface. Cut four pieces of 6-inch long ribbon for each cushion. Pin two pieces of the ribbon at the two back corners of the cushion.

    • 5). Lay the other square of fabric on top, with the right sides of the fabric together. Make sure the excess ends of ribbon end up in between the two pieces of fabric. Line up all the raw edges. Use pins to hold the fabric in place along three of the sides.

    • 6). Sew from one of the corners all the way around the three sides. Remove the fabric from the sewing machine and trim any excess threads. Clip the corners ¼ inch from the seam to remove some of the bulk of the fabric.

    • 7). Turn the cushion cover right side out.

    • 8). Insert the foam into the cover. Keep working until you have the corners of the foam properly in place inside the cover.

    • 9). Fold in the raw edges of the cover at the fourth side to enclose the foam completely. Use pins to hold the fabric in place.

Hand sew the cushion cover closed using a needle and heavy-duty thread to complete the cushion.
