How to Remove Paint From Slate

    • 1). Use a paint scraper or steel wool to remove as much of the paint that is covering the slate as you can manage. When you choose the steel wool, make sure it's of the softer kind and do not wet it. Getting it wet can risk rust stains appearing on the slate after the moisture dries. For the hard-to-get spaces, use a brass brush.

    • 2). Wearing disposable gloves, apply Xylene or Methyl Ethyl Ketone to a cloth. Rub it on the paint that remains on the slate. This will break up the bulk of the paint, acting in a similar fashion as paint thinner.

    • 3). Use a brass brush for the places on the slate where paint still remains. You can apply some Xylene or Methyl Ethyl Ketone to the brush and work it into the grain.

    • 4). Scrub the slate with soap and water. Let the slate dry and inspect it. If you need to remove more paint, repeat the scrubbing process. Once the paint is completely removed, scrub the slate again with clear water and let dry.
