How to Calculate Fill Dirt

    • 1). Measure your garden. Using the tape measure, determine the width and length of your garden, in feet.

    • 2). Determine the area of your garden. Multiple the length and the width to calculate the area. This is the total square footage of your garden.

    • 3). Determine how many cubic yards of fill dirt you need. Divide the total square footage of your garden by 1,000 and multiply the result by 3. This is how many cubic yards of fill dirt you need for every 1 inch of depth. Multiple the result by the depth, in inches, of the area you're covering, if it is deeper than 1 inch. For example, a 2,400 square foot garden that is 2 inch deep requires 14.4 cubic yards of fill dirt, while one that is 1 inch deep requires only 7.2 cubic yards.

    • 4). Round up for error. Purchase slightly more fill dirt than you will need to cover your garden. For example, if your garden is 2,400 square feet and 1 inch deep, it requires 7.2 cubic yards of fill dirt. Purchase 8 or even 9 cubic yards to account for potentially uneven areas or miscalculations.
