How to Overwrite a Windows XP Operating System
- 1). Back up all personal files, folders, documents, music, videos or other files to a removable hard drive, an Internet storage drive or to CD. You may also want to make a copy of your Internet connection details so you can quickly reconnect when you finish the re-installation.
- 2). Set your BIOS to boot the computer from the CD or DVD drive if it does not already do so. If you do not know how to access the BIOS on your computer, consult your owner's manual for instructions. Be careful while using the BIOS; changes made to the BIOS can cause problems.
- 3). Place the Windows XP CD into the disc drive and restart your computer. Once the computer restarts it will prompt you to press a key to boot from the Windows XP disc. Press a key and wait for the computer to load the Windows setup program from the Windows XP CD.
- 4). Tell the computer to reinstall Windows XP. When the Windows setup program loads it will ask you to choose between "Installing/Setting Up Windows XP," "Repairing Windows XP" or "Quitting the Installation Program." To reinstall XP choose "Installing/Setting Up Windows XP."
- 5). Complete the installation. Installation of Windows XP can take one or more hours depending on the speed of your computer and your disc drives and may involve restarting more than once. When the installation process is complete the computer will prompt you to enter your Windows XP Product Key. Enter the product key to complete the re-installation of Windows XP.
