How to Clean the Filter in a Muddy Pond

    • 1). Turn off the pond's filter and pump mechanisms. Remove the filter from the pond.

    • 2). Remove the media from the filter. If the filter uses rocks, remove the rocks from the filter using a sieve-style scoop. Place a gloved hand in the water to feel for any missed rocks. For pad filters, remove the pad. Some ponds use cartridges to house the filter. If this is the case, remove the entire cartridge, opening it to remove the filter.

    • 3). Clean mud and dirt from the filter cartridge by spraying it with a water hose. Use a sponge or old cloth to wipe persistently dirty areas. (This step is only necessary if the type of filter on your pond uses filter cartridges.)

    • 4). Place the pad or rocks on a surface where drainage can occur. For rocks, a colander works well for this purpose. Spray the rocks or pad filter using clean water. For stubborn mud or accumulated material, a high-pressure nozzle attached to a water hose may be necessary. Continue to spray with water until the filter is clean. Soaking the rocks or filter pad in clean water also helps remove dirt.

    • 5). Place the rocks or filter pad back inside the filter. Place the filter in the pond after thoroughly cleaning the rest of the pond. Start the filter.
