How to Disable Virtual Memory OS X

    • 1). Click on "Finder," typically located on the bottom left-hand corner of the desktop.

    • 2). Click on the "Applications" arrow to open Applications. Select the "Utilities" folder at the bottom of the Applications Menu. Select "Terminal" to open the Terminal screen.

    • 3). Type (minus the quotes) in the Terminal "cd /etc" and press "Enter." Next, type in the Terminal "sudo cp /etc/rc /etc/rc.orig" and press "Enter." Then, type in the Terminal "sudo pico /etc/rc" and press "Enter."

    • 4). Scroll down using the arrow key until you see "dynamic_pager -F ${swapdir}/swapfile" or "dynamic_pager -H 40000000 -L 160000000 -S 80000000 -F ${swapdir}/swapfile."

    • 5). Type "#" at the beginning of the "dynamic pager" line that appears in the Terminal. Hit Ctrl + X to save the file. Press "Y" to say you want to disable the virtual memory, then hit "Enter." The virtual memory will be disabled.

    • 6). Type "Exit" into the Terminal and hit "Enter" to log out of Terminal.
