How to Season Pecan Wood
- 1). Cut the pecan wood into lengths of between 12 and 20 inches. Split the wood to expedite the drying process.
- 2). Identify a covered area to store the pecan wood in while it seasons. A simple lean-to will provide adequate shelter, but do not use a tarp directly over the wood as it will hold in moisture that can rot the wood.
- 3). Cover the floor of the storage area with wooden pallets, pressure-treated wood panels or cinder blocks to prevent the bottom layer of pecan wood from absorbing ground moisture.
- 4). Arrange a layer of pecan wood over the pallets or blocks. Continue layering, but allow gaps between the wood for air circulation.
- 5). Leave the wood for at least 1 season, but preferably a year. Wood that is properly seasoned will have large cracks and will create a hollow cracking sound when 2 pieces are hit together.
