    • 1). Determine the version of Windows you are using by clicking the "Start" button, right-clicking "My Computer" or "Computer" and selecting Properties. The controller only works if you have Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) or later. If your computer doesn't qualify, launch Windows Update from the "Start" menu and follow the prompts.

    • 2). Install the software to run the controller. Drivers must be installed to your computer before using the controller. Download the driver directly from Microsoft via the link in the Resources section.

    • 3). Test the controller with another game. If the controller works there, adjust the settings for the first game. Consult your user's manual.

    • 4). Test the controller's functionality. Click the "Start" button, open "Run" and type "joy.cpl" (without the quotation marks) into the prompt. Click "OK." The Game Controllers window should list your Xbox Controller.

    • 5). Switch the controller to another USB port. If this fixes the problem, the issue is likely with the port.

    • 6). Update the drivers. Open "Run," type "sysdm.cpl" (again without quotation marks) and click "OK." Go to the Hardware tab and click "Device Manager." Locate "Microsoft Common Controller for Windows Class," double-click "Xbox 360 Controller for Windows" and click "Update Driver". If this doesn't work, try the "Troubleshoot" option in the same menu.
