How to Add Stone to a Concrete Foundation Wall
- 1). Fasten the metal lath to the concrete foundation wall using concrete fasteners, trimming the lath to fit (as necessary) using metal sheers. Concrete fasteners come in a variety of types and sizes, depending on the application (stone type and wall size); consult with a masonry specialist at a local building supply center on what type of concrete fastener is best suited for your foundation wall.
- 2). Mix the mortar (as directed on mortar package) using the electric drill and mixing paddle in the 5-gallon bucket.
- 3). Apply a 1-inch thick layer of mortar to the bottom portion of the foundation wall using the brick trowel; apply enough mortar to accommodate the first row of stone.
- 4). Apply a row of stone along the bottom of the foundation wall, leaving about a 1/2-inch gap between stones (unless otherwise desired). Press the stones firmly to the wall and mortar to ensure a good bond.
- 5). Work your way up the face of the foundation wall, repeating steps 3 and 4 in horizontal rows.
- 6). Mix the grout (as directed on grout packaging) using the electric drill and mixing paddle in the 5-gallon bucket.
- 7). Pinch the bottom opening of the grout bag, then fill the bag 3/4 full with grout and twist the top opening closed.
- 8). Apply the grout to the joints between all of the stones, twisting the top of the bag to squeeze out the grout mixture.
- 9). Wipe away excess grout using a large wet sponge, rinsing the sponge as necessary.
