How to Make a 3-D Foamie
- 1). Drill a hole in the center of an appropriately sized wooden base of the same diameter as your selected wire coat hanger. Lay the base flat on the floor or your work surface and stick the end of the straightened wire coat hanger into the hole.
- 2). Cut the coat hanger using a pair of wire cutters and then bend and tape together sections of the wire coat hanger with duct tape to form a rough skeleton you would like to build your foamie around. The coat hanger provides strength to the sculpture, but is hidden and buried under the foam later.
- 3). Spray and cover the coat hanger with urethane spray foam insulation. Hold the can upside down and begin spraying at the base of the sculpture. Spray in short bursts allowing the foam to quickly expand before adding layers on top of it.
- 4). Apply the foam liberally to ensure that all areas of the sculpture have a sufficient amount of foam. Once finished, set the foam coated skeleton aside to cure for 24 hours.
- 5). Shape the sculpture by removing excess foam with the blade of a utility knife or wood rasp. Sculpting is an art form that requires a good deal of practice. If you remove too much foam, or the wire coat hanger becomes exposed, spray a layer of foam over the top of these sections, allow to harden, then re-shape.
- 6). Paint or glue fabric onto the finished sculpture as you like.
