How do I Make a Pond Aeration System?

    • 1). Take some basic bathymetric readings in your pond to locate the deepest areas in your pond. If a depth sounder or fish finder is not available you can use a simple rope with 1 foot markings with a brick tied to the other end. Mark the deepest hole with a rope and float.

    • 2). Contact an electrician to deliver power near the shoreline and install a ground fault circuit interrupter for safety. Should it be too expensive to bring power to the shore, you can make up the distance with larger diameter air tubing in lieu of electrical wire.

    • 3). Mount a weather proof cabinet on a concrete pad next to your power source. Install the compressor inside of the cabinet making sure you bolt it down to prevent excessive vibration.

    • 4). Connect your airline to the compressor and trench the airline from the compressor to the shoreline. Secure it with a stainless steel clamp. If the ground freezes in the winter, you must bury the tubing beneath the frost line.

    • 5). Connect the opposite end of the air tubing to the air diffuser. Use a clamp and secure the connection. Tie a rope to the diffuser and a small float to the other end- this will allow you to find the diffuser for future maintenance. Steer the boat out to the float you previously set to mark the deepest part of your pond. Slowly lower the air diffuser, ensuring it does not flip upside down, to the pond bottom.

    • 6). Turn on the air compressor and run it for 30 minutes. The following day run it for 1 hour and everyday thereafter that double the running time until you reach continuous operation.
