How to Install Crown Molding With Mitre Cut Steps

    • 1). Measure the wall you want your first piece of crown to attach to. Assume a 24-inch square column that meets the ceiling for this tutorial. Adjust the lengths to accommodate your installation. Write down the measurement, and indicate which end will get cut in which direction and the degree of the miter. In this case, the bottom line will be 24 inches, with each end being outside mitered at 45 degrees, one right and one left. An outside miter for crown always has the short corner at the bottom of the cut. An inside miter is vice versa.

    • 2). Set the saw to 45 degrees left of center. Place the molding on the saw, with the flat surface on the top against the fence and the flat surface at the bottom of the back against the table, because it will be installed in the corner of your wall and ceiling. Press the molding to the table and fence with your left hand. Pull the trigger with your right hand. Bring the saw down through the molding smoothly to cut through in one motion.

    • 3). Measure from the bottom corner of the miter 24 inches to the left, and mark the face of the molding at the bottom edge. Reset the saw to 45 degrees right, and shift the molding to the right so that the mark you just made is on the right side of the blade. Set the molding as before, and pull the blade down without depressing the trigger. Line up the right side of the blade against the left side of the mark. Hold the molding with the right hand, and make the cut with the left.

    • 4). Position your cut molding against the wall and ceiling, with the short bottom corners of your molding lined up with the corners of the column. Nail through the bottom and top edges of the molding into the wall and ceiling with an powered pin nail gun and 1½-inch nails.

    • 5). Cut the remaining pieces the same way, and line them up with the sides of the column against the ceiling. Line the top corners of the miters up with each other, and nail them in place. Use a 1-inch round dowel to press the edges of the mitered pieces together by rubbing firmly to bend them in and close up any remaining gap.

    • 6). Make inside miters with a similar technique. Mark your measurements on the bottom edge of the molding. Set the molding on the saw, with the bottom against the fence and the top against the table so that the mark is now at the top instead of the bottom.
