How to Wire an S-10 Radio
- 1). Lift the vehicle's hood and loosen the bolt that holds the negative battery cable clamp to the negative battery terminal post. Remove the cable from the battery and place it to the side of the battery terminals. Move to the inside of the S-10.
- 2). Remove the three screws around the steering column -- one at the top of the instrument panel, and two on either side of the steering column on the lower panel of the dashboard. Pull the lower panel away from the dashboard to reveal the screw on the left side of the steering column. Remove the screw with a Phillips-head screwdriver.
- 3). Pry the main dash panel from the dashboard with a trim panel removal tool. Work your fingers around the perimeter of the panel to remove it from the dashboard and set it aside.
- 4). Remove the two bolt screws from either side of the factory stereo bracket with a 7-mm socket and drive. Slide the factory stereo from the dashboard and disconnect the stereo wiring and antenna cable leads from the outlets on the rear panel of the stock stereo unit.
- 5). Insert the aftermarket faceplate adapter into the stereo mounting dock. Pull the stereo wiring and antenna cables from the back of the dock to the front of the S-10's dashboard.
- 6). Plug the wiring connectors into the wiring harness adapter lead. Connect the antenna cable to the GM
aftermarket antenna adapter. Plug the wiring harness adapter lead connectors into the appropriate outlets on the back of the aftermarket radio. Insert the GM aftermarket antenna adapter lead into the FM antenna input on the back of the new radio. - 7). Slide the aftermarket radio into the faceplate adapter until it snaps into place. Replace the main dash panel against the Chevy's dashboard. Press firmly around the perimeter of the panel to snap it back in place.
- 8). Replace the screw at the bottom left corner of the main dash panel with a Phillips-head screwdriver. Replace the two screws on either side of the steering column with the Phillips-head screwdriver. Replace the screw at the top of the driver's instrument panel with a 7-mm socket and drive. Return to the S-10's engine compartment.
- 9). Replace the negative battery cable clamp around the negative battery terminal lead post. Tighten the bolt on the cable with the wrench and close the Chevy's hood.
