- 1). Calculate using fuse value. This is a quick and easy way to approximate amplifier watt output without special equipment, according to Car Audio Help. Simply take the fuse value of the amplifier, multiply by six for A and B amps or 10 for D amps and this will give you an approximate watt value.
- 2). For a true test, set up all necessary equipment. According to Basic Car Audio Electronics, start by connecting a 12-volt power supply, power resistors and tone generator to the amplifier.
- 3). Turn the tone generator's levels all the way up or down for an easy reading. Turn the power supply and amplifier on.
- 4). Set the output frequency to around 100hz. According to Basic Car Audio Electronics, this frequency can be any value so long as it remains constant. Increase tone output to 2 volts.
- 5). Connect the oscilloscope. While paying attention to output voltage and oscilloscope, increase tone output. According to Basic Car Audio Electronics, when the tone generator's wave reading flattens out you are on the right track.
- 6). Connect the voltmeter to the amplifier. Increase the generator level until a clipping sound is heard, write down the voltage and turn the power supply off.
- 7). Calculate watts using Ohm's law. According to Installer, this is done by multiplying voltage by voltage and dividing by the impedence, which is the resistance value of the power resistors. The resulting value is your wattage output.
