What Is a Coogi Shirt?
- Originally designed as a luxurious Australian men and women's clothing line known as "Cuggi," the brand renamed itself to "Coogi" in 1987. The company enjoyed great success in the 1990s, but fell into economic hardship in the early 2000s. A group of U.S. investors under the name, Coogi Partners LLC, purchased the company in 2002.
- Coogi gained widespread popularity in the 1980s by celebrities such as Bill Cosby, who frequently wore its sweaters and shirts in his hit television show "The Cosby Show." In the 1990s, the brand found a new market among urban youth, including platinum selling rapper Christopher Wallace, a.k.a. Notorious B.I.G., who was frequently photographed and even rapped about the brand on numerous songs.
- Although not as popular as they were in the 1990s, Coogi, as of 2010, was still designing and manufacturing men's and women's shirts, sweaters, jeans, jackets and footwear and can be found at major retailers, such as Macy's, Bloomingdale's and more.
