The 1960s saw some memorable styles and fashions, such as mini-skirts, mods and the hippie movement. Most of the fashions you associate with the decade were only around during the mid- to late '60s. There were several styles of high heels, both in boots and shoes, that were popular during this era. - Go-go boots came in a variety of different heel heights. They started out as a tight ankle to mid-calf-length leather or patent leather boot, but by 1966, go-go boots were commonly knee-high. The boots tended to either have square or pointed toes. By the late '60s, it was possible to get thigh-high go-go boots and boots made from PVC and plastic. The go-go boot is thought to have been popularized by the TV show "The Avengers."
- Having been popular during the 1950s, in the very early 1960s shoes and boots with high stiletto heels were still in fashion. However, due to the feminist and women's liberation movements of the early '60s, stilettos lost popularity as they were uncomfortable and hard to walk in and seen as a symbol of male oppression and women's subservience. Instead, kitten heel shoes--with a heel generally between 1.5 and 2.5 inches--rose in popularity.
- Platform shoes and boots were made popular by the hippie movement during the late '60s. They were seen as a more daring alternative to the conservative kitten heel. The sole had a platform of between 1 and 4 inches, which was commonly made from plastic, cork or wood. Platforms tended to have either a round or square toe.
