How to Build a Long Bookcase
- 1). Saw one 4-foot piece of 1-inch by 10-inch board for the bookshelf top piece. Cut two 28-inch pieces of 1-inch by 10-inch boards for the shelves. Saw two 46-1/2-inch pieces of 1-inch by 10-inch board for the bookcase sides.
- 2). Lay the two sidepieces on the back edges parallel to each other on the work surface. Fit the shelf pieces between. Position the bottom shelf 2 inches from the bottom and the middle shelf 12 inches above the bottom shelf.
- 3). Apply wood glue to the side edges of your shelves and return to their position. Screw the shelves in place with two screws per shelf through the sides and into the shelves. Over tighten the screws slightly to sink the screws below the surface of the wood.
- 4). Stand the bookshelf upright and apply wood glue to the top raw edge of the sides. Position the top piece on the shelves. Because this piece will be held in place by gravity, and to improve the shelving unit's appearance, do not use screws on the top. Put a strap clamp around the top shelf, the side shelves and across the bottom to put pressure on the top piece while it dries overnight.
- 5). Saw a 4-foot kickboard for the front bottom of the bookshelf from the 2-inch wood trim. Cut a 4-foot half-round molding for the front of the top of the bookshelf. Lay the bookcase on its back and Apply the trim pieces with wood glue. Weight these down for overnight drying.
- 6). Prime the wood and allow it to dry completely before applying the top coat.
