How to Replace the U-Joint on a Chevy C-10
- 1). Lift the rear of the truck with a jack, place jack stands underneath on either side, and remove the tires.
- 2). Remove the four retaining bolts, located at the junction where the driveshaft and the rear differential meet, using a ratchet and socket.
- 3). Remove the holding straps and pull the driveshaft from the differential with your hands.
- 4). Place a drain pan beneath the transmission's tail shaft construction, and completely remove the driveshaft with your hands.
- 5). Locate the U-joint just above where the driveshaft was located, remove the retaining rings around the U-joint using pliers to squeeze the ends together, and pull the clip from the U-joint cap.
- 6). Push the cap out of the shaft by placing the U-joint press over that particular cap of the U-joint and slowly turning the handle until the cap slides out.
- 7). Repeat the process until all four caps of the U-joint have been removed.
- 8). Remove the entire U-joint from the driveshaft.
- 9). Install the new U-joint. Before doing so, however, be sure to remove the caps first.

Insert the caps into the driveshaft with your hands, and afterward plant them firmly into the U-joint using the U-joint press. - 11
Insert the new retaining rings tightly into their grooves on the caps using pliers. - 12
Reinstall the driveshaft by placing it first into the tail shaft of the transmission, then connecting the opposite end to the U-joint at the rear differential. - 13
Reinstall the holding straps and retaining bolts, raise the truck with the jack, remove the jack stands, and lower the truck to the ground.
