How to Change Spark Plug Wires in a '94 Cavalier
- 1). Purchase replacement spark-plug wires and dielectric grease from an auto-repair shop. You need to provide the attendant with the year, make, model and engine information in order to receive the proper replacement spark-plug wires. The dielectric grease is used to prevent corrosion.
- 2). Open the hood of your vehicle and locate the spark-plug wires. The wires are made of thick rubber, have a boot on both ends and stretch from the engine block to the distributor cap. You will find four or six spark-plug wires, depending on the type of engine in your '94 Cavalier.
- 3). Pull the longest spark-plug wire off the spark plug in the engine block. Grip the spark-plug wire by the boot and twist it to the right and left while pulling.
- 4). Follow the spark-plug wire to the distributor cap and remove the spark-plug wire from the cap using the same left and right twisting motion described in Step 3.
- 5). Find the replacement spark-plug wire that is the same length as the wire removed from the engine. You need to match the lengths of each spark-plug wire to ensure each wire reaches from the distributor cap to the spark-plug.
- 6). Coat the inside of each spark-plug wire boot with dielectric grease.
- 7). Connect the replacement spark-plug wire to the open terminal on the distributor cap by sitting the boot over the terminal and pressing down until you hear a pop.
- 8). Run the spark-plug wire through the engine compartment and connect the opposite end to the open spark plug.
- 9). Repeat Steps 3 through 8 with the remaining spark-plug wires.
