How to Troubleshoot a Mitsubishi Lancer

    • 1). Check to see if the engine runs smoothly after initial start-up and upon reaching normal operating temperature. If it does not, check the purge control valve on the turbo. You may need to have this problem serviced by a qualified mechanic, as turbocharging systems on the Lancer are sensitive to adjustment.

    • 2). Check for noise in the clutch area. The clutch gets used a lot on high performance vehicles. Make sure that the fork shaft is properly installed and that your throwout bearing has not failed. Over time, the bearing will wear out, and with increased use of the clutch, it may not last as long as the maintenance schedule for your Lancer suggests.

    • 3). Check for noisy gears or gear changes. You may have worn or damaged mesh gears. This is not uncommon if the Lancer has been driven hard and was not properly maintained by the previous owner. You may also have worn or syncronizers in the transmission. Since these are responsible for smooth shifting, have them checked and replaced by a transmission shop.

    • 4). Check to see that you can shift into all gears. If you are having problems shifting into any one particular gear, your entire transaxle may be failing, or you may just have a faulty clutch disc. Since changing the clutch is much less expensive (and simpler) than changing the transaxle, the clutch would be the place to start. This would be especially true if you tend to "ride the clutch" a lot during aggressive or "spirited" driving runs.
