The kitchen is the heart of the home, the room where the family gathers to prepare food, share their meals and even share their daily experiences with each other. Remodeling your kitchen is a fun way to spruce up your home and make this highly used space even more inviting for your family. Carpentry work in the kitchen adds to your decor and there are so many ways to personalize your kitchen space with carpentry. - Besides the appliances, the cabinets in your kitchen are the most noticed when someone walks into your kitchen. Cabinets come in many different colors, textures and sizes, and many different types of wood are available. There is oak, maple, pine and cherry to name just a few. You can purchase some premade cabinets at a home improvement store for a minimal cost. They are ready to be installed and you can even pay someone to install them for you. Paying for cabinet installation is great if you are not skilled at carpentry or do not have the time to complete the cabinets yourself. Some people like to make their own and start from scratch. If you make your own cabinets, you can make them just the size and design you like. It is not the ideal project for someone with limited carpentry skills. You will need a good collection of woodworking tools and some free time.
- Some people like to build an island in the middle of their kitchen. An island can serve as a place to prepare food and store pots and pans. Some kitchens are made with the stovetop on the island to free up counter space on your regular cabinets. You can even pull up two stools to the island and have extra room to seat your family or guests. Different stains and types of wood can be used on the island to give it a truly unique look and add eye appeal to your kitchen. As with the cabinets, an island can be purchased ready-made, made with your carpentry skills or by a hired carpenter. Some islands even come with wheels on the bottom so they can be rolled around to accommodate your needs.
- Wood floors in the kitchen have become more popular in recent years. Vinyl was once the staple for the kitchen floor, but some are finding they like the look and warmth of a wooden floor instead. Because the kitchen floor has the tendency to get wet more than other parts of the house, you will want to install a hardwood floor like oak, ash or maple instead of other woods that can be less durable. When you do have a spill, take care of it and clean it quickly to prevent damage to the wood floor.
