How to Remove an Electrical Box
- 1). Look for a large lever on the side of the box, or on a smaller box connected to the main breaker box. Pull the lever down into the off position to disconnect the main power, and twist a short piece of wire through the holes in the lock bracket to prevent it from being turned back on by accident.
- 2). Open the door of the electrical box. Remove the mounting screws from the corners of the face plate and remove the box to reveal the wiring. Twist the screws counterclockwise with a screwdriver to remove them.
- 3). Pull the breaker from the top bay in the box, prying it out gently with a small screwdriver if necessary. Loosen the screws in the ends of the breaker. Pull the two wires loose from the screws. Repeat with each breaker.
- 1). Label each pair of wires with a piece of masking tape as you go, marking the number of the circuit breaker for easy reconnection into the new electrical box.
- 2). Loosen the screws holding the green ground wires in the ground punch block, one screw near each wire. Pull the wires straight out to remove them from the ground punch block.
- 3). Locate the mounting screws in the back panel of the box and remove them with a screwdriver, turning them counterclockwise. Pry the box out from the wall with a flat prybar around the edges of the box. Pull it straight out from the wall.
- 4). Pull down on the box to stretch the wires out from the wall. Pull the wires out through the grommet in the top of the box one at a time to release the box from the wires.
