  If your vehicle is less than 30 years old, it is very likely that your headlight covers are made of plastic. In this case, there are three basic ways to solve to a foggy headlight issue.
  
  The first is to simply replace the headlights. The second is to purchase a product which claims to clear the fog away quickly and efficiently without much effort and the third includes an elbow grease recipe.
  
  

Replacement

  Replacement is the most costly of all three options. It is however, a guaranteed fix to the problem of foggy headlights. The other advantage to this choice, which is often a huge decision-making factor, is the fact that the vehicle owner expends no more energy than that of driving their vehicle to the service shop. Drive in, wait and drive out. It is a quick and easy process, but a bit more noticeable to the pocketbook.

  Purchasing a product is less expensive than having the headlights replaced or repaired by your mechanic. A product will typically cost less than $30 and there are many choices specifically formulated for headlight fog removal. When using these exclusively, only the product and a rag are recommended. There is supposed to be no need for any additional items to scrub or clean with. Simply using any brand of motor oil is also supposed to work the same way.
  
  

Elbow-Grease Method

  Other methods use sandpaper. 1000 grit, 1500 grit, and 2000 grit are recommended in different situations. Sand the headlights with a lower grit and then a higher grit sandpaper while using a cleaning solution. Then use a buffing cloth or a towel or a rag with a rubbing compound to buff the headlights to a shine.

  Foggy headlights are a very significant safety issue. Without clear lighting when driving in darkened conditions, scenarios which may already provide potential danger can be dramatically worsened with the lessened vision caused by the foggy headlights. It is imperative to have as much advance notice as possible when driving at night if there are animals in the road, miscellaneous obstructions, or even parked/stalled vehicles, in order to avoid these and prevent a potentially fatal accident from occurring.
