How to Tile a Border
- 1). Measure the wall area to be tiled. Run a measuring tape from corner to corner.
- 2). Measure the tile. Divide the width of the wall by the width of the tile. This will determine how many tiles are required for a single-row border.
- 3). Cut tile to fit the wall if needed. If the tile width does not divide equally into the width of the wall, cut a tile to make the right measurement. For example, if 12 tiles are too many and 11 tiles are too few, cut the 12th tile to fit the wall measurement.
- 4). Apply adhesive to the border area, using a trowel. Make a line along the edge of the wall, whether at the top or the bottom.
- 5). Apply a small amount of adhesive to the back of the first tile. If a tile was cut to fit, begin with it. Use a putty knife to put a thin layer of the adhesive on the back.
- 6). Press the tiles into place, beginning in a corner. Use the putty knife to smooth any excess adhesive that may squeeze out from under the tile.
- 7). Continue to apply tiles, pressing them together to make a tight, straight row along the edge of the wall. Leave any extra adhesive that squeezes out between the tiles, smoothing it to create the initial grout.
