    • 1). Identify your drive wheels (the wheels powered to move your vehicle). Your vehicle's manual will indicate this if you're not sure; it may state "rear wheel drive," "front wheel drive," "four wheel drive" or "all wheel drive." You will place the chains on the drive wheels. On four- or all-wheel drive vehicles, you will need two pairs of chains to maximize traction.

    • 2). Lay the chains flat and straighten all twists or kinks in the chain. Make certain any open "hooks" or sharp points in the chain are pointed down toward the ground. Lay the chains straight out from your drive wheels, so as to make driving onto the chains easier and ensure proper alignment. Note that on one side of the chain there is a shorter "C-hook," and on the other side there is a longer "bow lever." Arrange the chain so that the bow lever is on the outside of the vehicle, while the C-hook is toward the inside.

    • 3). Drive your vehicle over the chains, such that you are driving lengthwise on the chain. Stop the vehicle when you have approximately one foot remaining on the side of the tire offering the most room to work.

    • 4). Drape the longer end of the chain over the tire and hook the C-hook through the furthest chain link possible without using additional tools. On the other side of the chain, push the bow lever through the link corresponding to the link position from the other side. As an example, if you hooked the C-hook three links up the chain, push the bow-link through the third chain link on its respective side. Once through, pull the bow level back toward the direction form which it came and hook it into a link to secure it. This should tighten the chain.

    • 5). Repeat each step for the other tire(s).
