    • 1). Launch Microsoft Expression Web. Select "New" from the "File" menu. Select "Page."

    • 2). Click "General" in the first column of the New dialog box. Select "Dynamic Web Template" in the middle column and then click "OK." Expression Web creates a blank page initially entitled "Untitled_1.dwt" with two editable regions. The Doctitle editable region is in the Head section, which you can view in either Split or Code view of the page. Select one of these tabs from the bottom of the design window to switch views. The other editable region is a div tag, which includes all of the Body section. If visual aids are displayed, you can see labels, boxes or other indicators showing you the editable region. To toggle these, use "Visual Aids: Show" from the "View" menu.

    • 3). Select "Dynamic Web Template" from the "Toolbars" item of the "View" menu. Select "Manage Editable Regions" from the Dynamic Web Template toolbar. Select "Body," "Remove" and then "Close." Delete the div unless you want it as part of your page layout.

    • 4). Enter the static elements of your page, including logos, other graphical elements, headers, footers and navigation. Expression Web separates content from presentation by inserting a style section into the header of your template. You can move these elements into a separate style sheet and link to it if you prefer.

    • 5). Select an area that will contain editable content on your Web pages; for example, the main body of content. Select "Manage Editable Regions" from the Dynamic Web Template toolbar. Enter a name for your editable area into the Region Name field, then click "Add." Repeat to add additional regions. Save your template using the toolbar, or click "Save" from the "File" menu. Make sure that the file has a .dwt extension.

    • 6). Select the files you wish to attach to the DWT in the Folder List panel, or open a page by double-clicking it. You can update multiple pages by selecting more than one page from the folder list by holding down the "Ctrl" key while clicking the files. Select "Attach Dynamic Web Template" from the "Dynamic Web Template" item of the "Format" menu. Locate the DWT you wish to use and click "Open." If the page contains content, you need to match the content to an editable region or the content will be erased. If the suggested regions are acceptable, click "OK." Otherwise, select each row and then click "Modify" to match each region. Click "OK" when you have matched all regions.

    • 7). Select "Create from Dynamic Web Template" from the "New" item of the "File" menu if you wish to create a new page based upon a DWT.
