How to Fix Floor Popping Noises
- 1). Check the floorboard spacing. Panels should have a gap of a 1/8 inch to prevent popping. Tongue and groove flooring should be properly spaced because of the way the boards fit together.
- 2). Inspect where the floor joists and the boards meet in the basement.
- 3). Slide a thin piece of wood, called a shim, in areas where the nails come loose from the joist. Drive a screw at an angle through the shim and into the flooring above to secure the board in place and prevent the popping.
- 4). Remove the nails from above and install longer nails if all the nails look loose or are not touching the joists. Space the nails every 4 inches to prevent movement of the floorboards.
