How to Cut & Fit Watch Crystals

    Cutting the Crystal

    • 1). Measure the diameter of the watch crystal that you want to replace. Buy a crystal that's slightly bigger. Cutting a watch crystal refers to sanding it down to the size that you need. This is a manual process that requires patience.

    • 2). Grasp the crystal in your hand with a tight grip, and move the 800-grit sandpaper over the edge of the crystal. Turn the crystal slowly as you're sanding to make sure you remove an even amount of plastic from all points on the edge of the crystal.

    • 3). Place the new crystal directly on top of the old crystal and compare them to see where you need more sanding. Be sure to check the size after every few strokes with the sandpaper. If you sand off to much material, it won't fit properly in the watch.

    • 4). Fill-in the nicks along the edges of the watch crystal using brass cleaner. Apply a small amount of brass cleaner to a clean rag and run the rag around the edge of the crystal.

    Fitting the Watch Crystal

    • 1). Take the newly cut watch crystal and wipe off any excess brass cleaner. Be sure that the crystal is immaculately clean. Any leftover grime on the watch crystal can interfere with the clarity of the crystal.

    • 2). Place the new watch crystal inside of the watch enclosure and apply jewelers epoxy to the inside border of the watch crystal. This will keep the watch crystal in place if the watch is bumped of dropped. Be sure to use a very small amount of epoxy because a little goes a long way. Let it dry for up to 10 hours.

    • 3). Buff both sides of the crystal to remove any excess jeweler's epoxy using a clean, dry cloth. Insert the watch's mechanics back into the watch and close the back cover plate.
