Decorative Homemade Glass Jug Storage Container Crafts
- Mason, pickle or mayonnaise glass jar can be used to make a lighted potpourri warmer. This can also double as a night light. Putting it together is easy---just coil a set of a 25 or 50 small blinking Christmas lights in the jar. Lightly stuff your favorite potpourri around the lights, making sure a few of the lights are up against the glass. The top can be covered with a small lace doily or you can cut a round piece of lace to fit the top. The lace lid is held on with a thin elastic band around the neck of the jar. Pull the plug end of the lights through a hole you make in the lace cover.
This potpourri jar gives off a warm glow when it is plugged in. You can use blinking colored or white lights or lights that just stay on constantly while plugged in. The lights warm the scented potpourri, which makes the aroma stronger. If your potpourri starts to lose its scent, you can always sprinkle a couple of drops of essential oil in the potpourri. Do it sparingly---once the lights warm the container, the scent gets very strong. - Make your favorite handyman a storage rack using empty jars and jugs. Use smaller jars and screw the flat side of their tops onto a 2-by-4 piece of wood. You can paint or stain the wood first to give it a more decorative and finished look. Hang this on the underside of a shelf or a low hanging beam in the garage or basement. Put little nuts, screws, bolts, nails and other small hardware in the jars and screw them into the tops. This makes an organized storage system for the person who is always tinkering. The glass is transparent so it is easy to spot what is needed for each job.
You can use this same type of system under one of your kitchen cabinets, or fixed to the underside of a shelf in your cabinet. Use the smallest jars for this, such as a baby food jar. Spices, cake decorating sprinkles, baking powder and baking soda can be stored in these. It also works well in craft areas to hold small gems, pins, clasps, sparkles and all your other tiny craft supplies. You do not need to label anything because you can see what you need through the glass.
