How to Wire an HEI Distributor
- 1). Trace your spark plug wires back from the cylinders. Looking at the front of your motor, the first cylinder on your right is No. 1, the second is 3, the third is 5 and last is 7. From the left, the first cylinder is No. 2, the second is 4, the third is 6 and last 8.
- 2). Label the spark plug wire ends that will plug into your distributor. Use a piece of masking tape, and mark the cylinder numbers with a marker or pen.
- 3). Attach the spark plug wires to your distributor by placing them over the proper terminals and pressing down until they snap into place. Refer to your owner's manual for the correct firing sequence of your ignition. For example, the correct sequence for a Chevy V-8 is 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2 in a clockwise direction.
- 4). Check to make sure the ignition module is connected to the distributor cap. The module has an adapter with three wires that runs from the distributor base. Connect the module to the top of the distributor cap.
- 5). Connect power to the distributor cap. You will need to run a minimum of 14 gauge wire from the ignition or another 12 volt switched source. Plug the wire to the battery terminal on your distributor cap. The battery terminal is in front of the ignition module connection.
- 6). Verify that your distributor is working properly by starting the engine. If the engine starts and idles smoothly, you have wired it correctly.
