How to Change Oil in a 2007 Saab 93
- 1). Raise and support the vehicle. For easiest access to the drain plug, raise the vehicle using a jack on each side of the front axle. Secure the vehicle using jack stands. On four-cylinder models, you may be able to loosen the drain plug without using a jack, but be careful to avoid accidentally stripping it.
- 2). Remove the drain plug. Use a 15-mm socket on a ratchet to loosen the oil pan drain plug, located near the rear of the oil pan. Place a drain pan behind the drain plug so that no oil lands on the ground, as this can cause environmental harm.
- 3). Remove and replace the oil filter. On four-cylinder Saab 9-3 models, the oil filter is a canister-type filter located on the topside of the engine, to the right when looking from the front.
While the oil drains, use a torx screwdriver to loosen the screws and remove the Saab Turbo branded shroud over the engine. Next, use your Saab canister removal tool (or a 32-mm socket) to break the oil filter housing loose. Pop off the old filter element and replace it with a new one. Also remove the rubber gasket along the threads of the oil filter canister and replace it with a new one.
On six-cylinder models, the oil filter is located near the oil pan, on the bottom of the vehicle. A traditional oil filter wrench can be used to loosen it. Lubricate the threads of the six-cylinder oil filter with some new oil, so it is easy to remove later. - 4). Tighten the drain plug. Once the oil stops draining, remove the old crush washer from the drain plug and replace it with a new one. Tighten the drain plug by hand, and make it snug using the 15-mm socket.
- 5). Add oil. The capacity of the 2007 9-3 engine is approximately 6 liters. Remove the oil filler cap on the top of the engine and add 1 liter at a time. To avoid overfilling, check the oil after adding 5 liters. Top the oil off until it is between the low and full marks on your dipstick.
- 6). Lower the vehicle. Use a jack to lower the 9-3 from the jack stands.
- 7). Check for leaks. Briefly run the engine and check for leaks around the oil filter housing and drain plug. If leaks are present, turn off the engine and make sure that the oil filter and drain plug are tight.
