How to Inspect for Tire Defects in a VW Beetle
- 1). Check the tires and tire pressure each week or every 250 miles. Wait until the tires are "cold" to check the pressure to get an accurate reading.
- 2). Note that the tires are equipped with wear bands that appear when the tread gets to 1/16 inch. Replace the tires when the wear bands appear.
- 3). Look for abnormal tread wear on both sides of the tires, Take the car for service when cupping, flat spots or uneven wear appear on any of the tires.
- 4). Use a tread gauge to check the depth of the tread. Place a Lincoln penny into the tread with the top of Lincoln's head oriented to the tire. Replace any tire that leave a gap between the surface of the tire and the top of Lincoln's head, thus indicating insufficient tread.
- 5). Take the vehicle to a professional for balancing and rotation of the tires. Have the tires professionally rotated every 7500 miles or sooner in cases of uneven wear.
- 6). Inflate both the front and rear tires to 28 psi. Check monthly to make sure the pressure is maintained. Use a tired gauge to get an accurate reading. Make sure the valve caps are securely in place after checking the pressure.
- 7). Suspect a slow leak or a fault in the tire if the pressure in one tire seems much lower than the others during the same period. Use a special wrench to make sure the valve is fitted properly and not leaking.
