How to Accessorize with Bright Purses

By the time prom comes, spring has fully sprung and bright colors will be all the rage. Accessorizing a peppy pink, cool turquoise or pretty purple purse with your prom ensemble can totally tie your look together. As any fashionista knows, it’s all about the details.

Check out these bright evening clutches and bags spotted on the red carpet and use them as style inspiration when you search for your prom purse.

In this photo, Kelly Lynch pairs a gorgeous turquoise clutch with a solid-color soft orange dress. Pairing complimentary brights is always a good choice, especially when one piece is hot and the other is cool.

Next, a bright houndstooth clutch.

Houndstooth Clutch, Printed Gown

Go wild with prints like Kate Mara did for a fashion event in New York City. This bright houndstooth clutch is totally unique with its interlocking orange and pink pattern. Mixing patterns can be a fashion risk, but because the purse colors play off the watercolor print in Kate’s dress, this look totally works.

Match your prom purse with studded heels.

Next, how to brighten up your entire outfit with a single purse.

Purple Purse, Printed Dress

Solid color prom purses will always work against printed dresses, especially when the two have similar colors. In this case, Cobie Smulders clutch totally brightens up her entire outfit! She was smart to choose the brightest flower in her dress to match her clutch. Her ensemble just wouldn’t look as springy if she had chosen a black or brown clutch.

Next, a daring yellow accessory.

Yellow Clutch, Yellow Dress

Bringing along a prom purse in the same hue as your dress seems like an easy choice… but the effect is totally glam. Here, Elizabeth Banks pairs a tiny yellow leather clutch with her yellow sequin dress. It’s bold, it’s bright and it’s one of my favorite red carpet accessory pairings this season. The contrasting textures totally make this look work!

Bright Clutch, White Dress

If your prom dress is a soft neutral color, a bright purse can totally make your outfit pop. Here, Charlotte Spencer mixes a wide red-orange envelope clutch with a little white dress. It’s a simple and nearly effortless move for prom girls. Adding a bright clutch to any outfit instantly makes it trendy for spring.

Red Clutch, Black Dress

If your prom dress is on the dark side, you can brighten up your entire outfit with the help of a single accessory- a bright clutch. Here, actress Gugu Mbatha-Raw accessorizes a gorgeous black dress with a red satin formal clutch. The look is eye-catching and prom-appropriate. Add a pair of red heels and you’ll be a prom accessory queen!

Next, a purse with a patterned dress.

Carrying a prom purse in one of the brightest colors from your patterned dress is an easy accessorizing trick. Heidi Mount chose a small quilted turquoise clutch to go with her gown, and the result is a bag that practically bounces off her ensemble. Turquoise accessories are the perfect spring-to-summer transitional pieces.

I couldn’t do a piece on prom purses without including at least one quirky piece! This candy apple-shaped purse was toted by Stefanie Scott. Though it’s not the traditional formal clutch, it’s definitely a conversation piece and plays beautifully off her playful black-and-white polka dot dress. If you carry this piece for prom, you’re sure to be the only gal wearing it!
