How to Remove Tile Adhesive From Tiles

    • 1). Remove adhesive before it sets into place whenever possible using a damp sponge or cloth. Wipe the surface of the tile with the sponge until no trace of the adhesive remains. Rinse the sponge often to keep from spreading diluted adhesive over the tiles with the sponge, as diluted adhesive will dry into a thin film that dulls the surface of the tile.

    • 2). Brush the surface of the tiles with a gel based chemical adhesive remover if the adhesive has dried. Allow the remover to dwell on the tile, dissolving the adhesive on the tile surface. If the tiles are glazed the solvent can remove the glazing as well if left too long.

    • 3). Watch for any signs of the adhesive loosening from the surface of the tiles. Test a small section of the tile to see if the adhesive is ready for removal. When loose, scrape the remover away with a plastic paint scraper, removing the adhesive as well. Rinse the tile with clean water to remove any residue.
