    • 1). Mark the cylinder head at each spark plug wire using the masking tape and permanent marker. Label the holes to each plug wire with a number or alphabetical system (e.g., a, b,c or 1,2,3) until all of them are labeled. Follow each spark plug wire to its termination on the distributor cap. Label each termination to the matching spark plug wire, so you know which wire goes where when it comes time to install the new wires.

    • 2). Hold the base of one of the spark plug wires on the cylinder head and twist it with your wrist while pulling it vertically up out of the cylinder head.

    • 3). Follow the spark plug wire to its connection to the distributor, pulling the wire out of the clips that hold it in place along the way. Pull off the other end of the spark plug wire using the same twisting and vertical pulling motion.

    • 4). Repeat steps for the remaining spark plug wires on the engine.
